Blue & White Famille Rose Mandarin Fish Collection

Centered on the auspicious idea of “Nian Nian You Gui” — prosperity year after year, this collection combines traditional blue-and-white porcelain with famille rose painting to bring the mandarin fish vividly to life.

Aquatic plants are rendered in layered Qingming blue, creating the quiet depth of an underwater landscape. The fish’s natural markings are painted in rich purple-brown tones, while soft violet gradients give the fins a graceful sense of movement.

Gilded details define the head of the fish, adding a refined brilliance, while warm gardenia yellow brings vitality to the body.

The calm depth of cobalt blue meets the vivid colors of famille rose—blue and white creates the water, while color brings the fish to life.

Story Inspiration

Aquatic plants gently sway as a mandarin fish moves through the water.

Huashan uses cobalt blue to create the underwater world and famille rose colors to bring the fish to life.

Deep blues establish a quiet sense of depth. Warm yellow illuminates the body, purple-brown tones define its natural markings, soft violet gives movement to the fins, and gilded details add a final touch of brilliance.

Yet the mandarin fish was chosen for more than its natural beauty.

In Chinese, gui in guiyu (鳜鱼), mandarin fish, echoes gui (贵), a word associated with prosperity and distinction.

This wordplay inspires the collection’s central wish:

Nian Nian You Gui — prosperity year after year.

The Chinese word for fish, yu (鱼), also echoes yu (余), meaning abundance or surplus, recalling the traditional expression Nian Nian You Yu (年年有余).

Together, the two meanings create a layered wish for a flourishing life:

prosperity year after year, abundance year after year.
